As symbols of power and wisdom, lions are often seen as magnificent creatures in the Chinese culture, with lion dances often being conducted as a means to bring good luck and fortune into a specific locale. However, who’s to say other cultures can’t enjoy or be apart of this beautiful celebration too?

A recent TikTok video has been making waves online after a lion dance celebration was held at a house-warming party of a Malaysian-Indian family. Posted by TikTok user @shasvikaamua, the clip showed a gorgeous black lion grace the compound and entrance of a family home.

It is not until a closer look does one notice that the lion dancers themselves are Malaysian-Indian. Taking the time to walk past every room of the house, the dancers made their way through the living room, dining room, and kitchen, before returning to the hall once again.

The video ends with the lion moving upstairs, likely to “bless” the rest of the household. With children walking closely behind them every step of the way, it was clear that their presence ushered in a sense of joy for all those present at the house-warming event.

After doing some sleuthing of our own, we discovered that the performers are actually part of the Tamilan Lion Dance Team located in Rawang, Selangor. The team itself consists of Malaysian-Indian presenters, who carry out lion dance shows as part of their trade.

Receiving huge praise for their performance, many Malaysians were in awe over the group carrying out an custom which is traditionally practiced in Chinese culture.

The dance crew themselves also added to the comments under the post, thanking the user and her family for supporting them and having them for the house-warming event.
