Nobody likes the feeling of looking for a parking spot and thinking that you’ve found one only to realise that it’s been “chopped” by another person standing there.

But what if the purpose of “chopping” the space is so that they can set up their booths for their small business?

Yesterday, a video of a car wanting to park in a parking spot that has been “booked” by another man using a foldable table was shared on the Facebook page, 我们是马来西亚人 We are Malaysians.

The dashcam footage of the car shows it driving through a road lined with cars on both sides. When the driver saw the parking spot on his right that was reserved using the foldable table, he turned, as if expecting the table to be removed.

In the parking spot next to the “chopped” one, a man can be seen fiddling with some items in his car boot. It is believed that the man intended to use both parking spots to set up a booth for his business.

Noticing the driver, he proceeded to ask him to move along as he has already “chopped” the space.

Netizens are divided

In the comments, netizens have mixed reactions. They did not necessarily show support for the driver or the vendor, but had different opinions on who was more at fault.

Some thought the driver was being petty as there were many more parking spots available. They questioned if the driver refused to park in another spot because he’s not good at parallel parking.

Seems like the driver is not good at parallel parking. He wanted to just enter that parking spot,” said one netizen, adding that “chopping” parking for business purposes is still acceptable, but not when people “body park” in malls.

Another netizen pointed out that it seems like people were getting ready for a pasar malam there. So if the driver parked his car there, he will be stuck till midnight.

On the other hand, some netizens were upset at the vendor for wanting to set up his booth at a parking spot.

“He thinks the parking spot belongs to his dad. If you want to do business, find another spot.”

Just report it to the council. This is what happens when nobody reports it.”
