A recent video has gone viral after a woman claimed she fell victim to a man who offered to “help” her look for her missing phone in Melaka.

According to the woman, the incident happened while she was sitting on a bench by the river with her mother when she realised that her mobile phone was missing.

Man reportedly asks for RM200 “duit kopi” after helping woman retrieve missing phone

The woman claimed that shortly after she realised her phone was missing, a man approached her and said he had seen someone taking it. He allegedly told her that his friend was chasing after the person and offered to help her retrieve the phone.

She said the man later took her to another location, where he returned her phone but asked for RM200 in “duit kopi“. According to her, he repeatedly pressured her to say how much she was willing to give.

“Duit kopi” means a small amount of money given to someone as a token or informal payment for helping you or doing you a favour.

“While we were walking, he asked what phone I had and then asked, ‘How much is your phone? When we get it back later, can you give my friend some ‘duit kopi’?”

“He kept pressuring me to say how much ‘duit kopi’ I was willing to give. He then told me to wait while he went to get the phone from his friend,” she said.

In the video, the woman could also be heard calling her “brother” for help, although she later clarified that the person was actually her friend. She eventually passed her phone to the man so he could speak to her friend.

The woman claimed that when her friend said he was coming over, the man appeared to want to leave. However, he still asked, “Even RM10 or RM20 for some spending money will do.”

She also claimed that the man continued pressuring her for “duit kopi”, with the amount eventually dropping from RM200 to RM50.

The woman then suggested that they make a police report. However, the man allegedly told her to wait there before quickly disappearing between the village houses along the road.

The victim has yet to lodge a police report

The incident has since drawn a response from Pemuda Kampung Morten chief Ahmad Safwan Salim, who apologised over the concerns and discomfort caused by the incident.

He said the group takes the matter seriously and has since lodged a police report at the Melaka Tengah Police Station at 6:56 PM yesterday (2 September).

However, Melaka Tengah District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Halim Abas confirmed that the alleged victim has yet to lodge a police report over the viral incident.

Ahmad Safwan added that Pemuda Kampung Morten would continue doing its part to address the matter and take the necessary steps to ensure the safety and comfort of both the community and visitors to the village.

“We apologise for any inconvenience, concern and discomfort caused, and deeply regret this incident. A police report has also been lodged, and we leave the matter to the authorities to conduct further investigations,” he said, as quoted by Harian Metro.
