Honesty is always the best policy especially when it’s between couples as it helps build trust. Couples should be able to trust each other as they may potentially start a new life together. That being said, lying about yourself to your partner is highly frowned upon as it may jeopardise the relationship.
Just recently, a woman shared her relationship story onto a Facebook page. In her post she said,
“I’ve been with my boyfriend for 2 years and I’m 14 years older than him. I know we shouldn’t have gotten together in the first place as I lied to him about how old I really am.”
She then continued in her post saying that throughout the 2 years they were together, she has tried to slip in the conversation about her lie and wanting to come clean. She mentioned that she really wanted to confess about lying and that she is actually 14 years older but every time she wanted to do it, her partner would show signs that he cannot really take relationships that has a huge age gap.
“Just 2 days ago, he was curious and checked my IC without telling me and he found out that I was lying to him. He got so mad and broke up with me”, she said.
She then ended the post asking if having a big age gap is a problem to a relationship.
Following her post, many netizens have left their comments and here’s what some of them said:
“Actually, age isn’t the problem here, the problem is you lying to him about it. You should’ve been honest with him in the first place.”
“If you didn’t think it was a problem, you wouldn’t have lied in the first place. You couldn’t accept your own age and lied about it during your relationship, how could there be any trust left in your relationship?”
“If you have a life partner, your goal is to stay with each other for a long time. If you want that, you cannot lie to your partner. It seems like he broke up with you because you lied to him and with that big of an age gap, he couldn’t take it. I think the main reason for the downfall of your relationship is because you lied.”
