2021 is truly the year for Malaysians to shine on the international stage.

First, Dr. Lavanya Sivaji, this year’s Miss World Malaysia, took our breaths away with the traditional Mah Meri tribe garment and now, 2021’s Miss Grand Malaysia is spicing things up with a costume that is beyond belief.

Miss Grand Malaysia took to their Facebook page to showcase Miss Grand Malaysia 2021, Lishalliny Kanaran, in an incredible ‘7 Ancient Princesses of Ulek Mayang‘ costume, depicting an old folk song and dance from Terengganu.

The costume, which weighs around 50 kgs and was created by Sarawak-based designer, Aldrin Artistry, tells the story of a fisherman who’s soul was taken by a sea spirit.

The sea spirit, a princess, fell in love with the fisherman who didn’t love her back. So, one day, she took his soul and left him in a trance-like state.

“The fisherman’s friends asked a traditional healer to restore his spirit and bring him back to health. During the healing ritual, the bomoh summoned the the spirit of the sea-princess using mayang (coconut palm blossom), kemenyan (benzoin resin) and offerings of coloured rice, and called upon her five sisters to help seize the object of her desire.”

“A tug-of-war ensues between the healer and the six princesses for the soul of the fisherman. Finally, the seventh and eldest princess arrives and sends her sisters back to the seas with the words, ‘I know your origins, let those from the sea return to the sea and let those from land return to land'”, Miss Grand Malaysia shared.

She then released the soul of the fisherman and restored his health.

And as astounding as this costume is, Lishalliny’s energy and expressions showcased through her face and body language just takes it to new heights.

Miss Grand International 2021, taking place in Phuket and Bangkok, Thailand, will be coming to an end on 5 December and we wish Lishalliny nothing but the best of luck!

Kick ass out there, Lishalliny! You are making us all extremely proud!
