PDRM in Kedah arrested a man after he was believed to have killed and set his mother on fire in an incident at Jalan Tok Keling yesterday (March 2).

The Kota Setar District Police Chief, ACP Siti Nor Salawati Saad, said the police received a call through the MER 999 line at 7:48 AM regarding an incident involving a man on a rampage. A team of police officers was then dispatched to the location for initial action as soon as the information was received.

The burnt remains of a 68-year-old woman were found inside the house, and she was believed to have been murdered.

“Based on the initial investigation and an interview with the witness, who is the 14-year-old daughter of the suspect living in the house, it was revealed that between 7 AM and 7:30 AM, the witness heard an argument between her father (the suspect) and the victim, who was her grandmother.”

The witness ran to the neighbour for help when her grandmother was heard crying. The suspect then threatened the neighbour, so the latter had no choice but to call the police immediately.

Siti said an initial investigation revealed that the suspect holds an OKU card.

Based on a report by China Press, the suspect was brought to court this morning and will be remanded for seven days. The suspect has allegedly been suffering from mental illness due to family problems in 2019.

He has no criminal record, and drug tests came back negative.
