It’s safe to say that food is one of the many “languages” that connects people together, regardless of race and belief.

Recently, a Malay aunty from Klang found her fame after her egg cakes, most commonly known by Malaysians as Kuih Bahulu have been well received by people of all races. The unique thing about her Bahulu is how it’s shaped as koi fish and the colours as well! As we are still in the Lunar New Year season, this is definitely the time for home bakers to grab the opportunity and market their products.

The Malay aunty, whose name is Pujiah, revealed that she has been in the business for about 10 years now. Initially, she made her Bahulu in the shape of gooseberry prior to changing them into koi fish-shaped, which was suggested by her Chinese friends in Pulau Ketam, Klang.

Pujiah, who is 62-years-old, shared her tips in making her infamous Bahulu, which is by adding a little colour of red, green and yellow into the hot pan to give the koi fish Bahulu some colour which will make them look better visually. She also knows what each colour represents.

“My Chinese friends told me that red means prosperity, green means harmony and yellow means a kind of respect and admiration given to each other,” she explained.

Her egg cakes have always been a favourite among the community in Pulau Ketam. Since Pujiah has quite a lot of Chinese friends, she often seeks advice from them in order to understand their tastes and demands. This explains why Pujiah usually tries to adjust her recipes, especially by reducing the sweetness to attract more Chinese buyers.

Fortunately, she does not have to do all the work alone as her son has always been a great help to her in the kitchen. In terms of the price, 2 koi fish egg cakes are sold at RM3, while a huge set which contains 6 small egg cakes and 2 large egg cakes are priced at RM65.

Egg cakes are definitely one of the fondest memories for most of us growing up. We are happy to see that the traditional Kuih Bahulu is being “reinvented” in creative and prosperous ways!
