Just like many other industries out there, those working in the service industry are struggling too.

But that doesn’t mean we should take advantage of the situation by asking for unreasonably lower prices, especially when the value of their service is realistically higher.

Makeup artist, Kenny Yee, took to his Facebook account to showcase a customer who requested a bridal makeup look and hairdo for an unreasonably low price.

He wrote, “Please respect makeup artists! Even water colour paints or kid’s arts and crafts tools are way more than RM100. Ridiculous! She appointed me but my services were over her budget (I don’t even charge that expensively). I thought of introducing other makeup artists to her, so I asked her, ‘what’s your budget?'”

The bride had replied with “RM100 to RM200.”

“I was shocked! I understand all fields of businesses are having a tough time now, but this price is seriously a humiliation to artists. [It’s the] first time I’m seeing such a budget of RM100, I would rather you request for a sponsor, at least it wouldn’t sound so bad.”

The bride tried to justify the low price based on the small scale of the wedding, but the number of guests clearly does not affect the effort, skills, and materials used in the makeup look and hairdo.

“It is not about big or small scale, it’s respect towards the makeup artist. A makeup artist will need to wake up in the morning at about 5am and drive all the way to the destination. Do you know how much it costs for beauty blenders, foundation, brushes, bases, blushes, and more?

“They are also earning a living. So sorry, dear, I will not be sharing any makeup artist contacts with you,” he responded to the bride.

It’s no secret that makeup items are rather expensive, especially the good quality ones, which is why artists use those to ensure the makeup on your faces stays fresh-looking throughout the day. It also takes immense skill and effort to nail the look.

Hence, it’s only fair that we properly value the services of makeup artists by honouring their prices.

After all, they need to make a living too.
