Fires in Indonesia’s Kalimantan and Sumatra have sent thick haze across parts of neighbouring countries, with air quality reaching unhealthy levels and Sarawak reportedly recording hazardous Air Pollutant Index (API) readings.

Despite this, Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it has yet to receive any formal complaints over the haze affecting countries including Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines, according to the Jakarta Globe.

Indonesia has yet to receive any official letters of protest

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Yvonne Mewengkang said yesterday (17 September) that Indonesia has yet to receive any official letters of protest from its neighbouring countries over the haze.

“We have not received any letter of protest from countries in the region or our neighbours. There is no such thing to this day,” Yvonne said.

Previously, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto discussed the forest fires and the latest developments in the conflict in West Asia on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi.

“I also renewed my invitation for him to visit Malaysia”

The Prime Minister had spoken with the Indonesian President during a gala dinner held in conjunction with the summit, where they discussed the forest fires and the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

Anwar said he also took the opportunity to renew his invitation for Prabowo to visit Malaysia soon, where they could discuss and resolve several outstanding bilateral matters.

“With President Prabowo, we also discussed the issue of forest fires and developments in the conflict in West Asia, which require a shared commitment and joint action.

“I also renewed my invitation for him to visit Malaysia as soon as possible so that several outstanding bilateral matters can be discussed and resolved,” Anwar wrote.
