An Indonesian influencer is facing backlash after questioning whether a boycott of Indonesian brands by Malaysians would have a significant impact, following a controversial post by an Indonesian skincare brand that featured Malaysia’s flag alongside those of other Southeast Asian countries.
In his response, the influencer pointed to Indonesia’s population of more than 290 million, contrasting it with Malaysia’s population of around 34 million, and questioned how much influence Malaysians could have through a boycott.

Indonesian influencer claims Malaysian boycott would have no impact
“What is Malaysia? There is a post on Threads that appears to be from an account owned by a Malaysian. The account is inciting and encouraging netizens to boycott Indonesian products in Malaysia. How can you call it a boycott by a country with only 34 million people when we have more than 290 million people?
“Hey, Upin Ipin, you’ve already lost, even since the time of your ancestors. Your ancestors were led by someone who came from Indonesia.”

“Malaysia would never existed without Indonesia”
The individual also claimed that Malaysia would not exist without Indonesia, accusing Malaysians of feeling insecure and being envious of Indonesia’s history, culture, and natural resources.
He also alleged that if Sultan Iskandar Shah had never come to the Malay Peninsula and Malaysia had not become a British puppet state, Malaysians would simply be an ethnic group living in small communities.
“No wonder you feel insecure and are always envious of Indonesia’s history, culture and natural wealth. After all, you would never have existed without Indonesia,” he said.
