As much as we did not want to touch on such a subject, it’s only important for everyone to know their rights.

Unfortunate events may happen at any moment without notice – this includes someone passing. Surprisingly, did you know we are able to claim monetary aid in a few places in Malaysia. However, you will first need to be named as a beneficiary!

These things are inevitable, so make sure you or your next-of-kin get their relevant documents prepared upon application.

1. EPF/KWSP

According to EPF, if a member is pronounced dead, their next-of-kin can collect the deceased’s EPF savings. On top of that, the beneficiary shall receive a one-time payment of RM2,500. There are certain criteria for you to claim the money.

Criteria:

  • Deceased is Malaysian (including permanent resident) or non-Malaysian under the age of 60
  • Application must be done within 6 months after the member’s death

2. Bantuan Sara Hidup Tuntutan Skim Khairat Kematian (SKK)

If a recipient of Bantuan Sara Hidup Rakyat (BSH) or Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) is announced dead within 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2019, their next-of-kin can claim RM1,000 under Skim Khairat Kematian from any Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) branch.

3. Skim Insurans Takaful Pelajar

This insurance is covered for 24 hours a day, lasting for one entire year starting the first day of school within and out of school ground. Different claims can be made based on the type of incident occurred.

  • Death by accident – RM5,500
  • Permanent paralysis of the entire body due to accident – RM22,000
  • Loss of both hands/both feet/sights for both eyes due to accident – RM22,000 (RM10,000 for losing only one of the hands/feet/eyesight)
  • Death by normal sickness – RM1,500
  • Admitted to government hospital due to accident – RM25/day up to 60 days
  • Wheelchair allowance – RM1,000

Take note thatĀ this scheme is for students from any government or government-aided schools!

4. PERKESO / SOCSO

All employees should be insured under the scheme of PERKESO. If an employee dies due to employment injury including commute to and from work, or while he/she is a recipient of Permanent Disablement Benefit, the person in charge of his funeral shall receive Funeral Benefit of the amount spent on the funeral up to RM2,000.

Besides that, dependents shall receive Survivors’ Pension even if the person dies whether or not it is job-related. The condition for dependents to receive Survivors’ Pension is the insured is dead before 60 years old or was a recipient of Invalidity Pension regardless of his age.

5. Penang State Government

In Penang, the family shall receive RM1,000 if the deceased is a senior citizen (age of 60 or above). Be sure the senior citizen is registered under the Penang State Government and the person shall receive RM100 upon registration.

6. JPA

If the deceased was a working or retired civil servant, the beneficiary shall receive RM3,000 under Bantuan Mengurus Jenazah. The donation shall be given only once according to priority:

  1. Widow/widower
  2. Children
  3. Parents
  4. Family who in charged of his funeral (requires Certificate of Oath)
  5. Other party who in charged of his funeral (requires Certificate of Oath)

Death is inevitable and can happen to us at any time. To all Malaysians out there, always know your rights and be well-prepared for any event that might happen to you.
