During the lunar new year, it is common for children to receive red packets from married couples and family members.

However, in this day and age, service workers such as servers, cleaners and security guards will probably receive them as well as it is an appreciation for their efforts year-round.

Recently, a woman in Hong Kong shared on her Xiao Hong Shu account that her father, who works as a security guard in a local residential area had received a big stack of ang pows this year.

“My father works as a security guard and when he came home today, he told me that this is the first time in his life receiving so many ang pows!”

  • Day 4: 45
  • Day 5: 48
  • Day 6: 43
  • Day 7: 16

This makes it a total of 407 ang pows.

As he took leave on the 2nd day, his daughter was wondering how much more he would have received if he was working all the time.

According to the woman when replying to the comments, it is said that the ‘ang pow market rate’ in Hong Kong for service workers is around 10-20 HKD (RM6.11-12.22).

“There will be red packets for security guards. I know a rich woman and she gives the security guards a 50 yuan (RM33.40) red packet each,” the commenter said.

The woman then replied and said, “My father is a security guard in an average residential area so the red packets are commonly at 10-20 HKD, security guards in high-class areas will probably receive more.”

She did not reveal how much her father had gotten but did say that one of his colleagues had about 13,000 to 14,000 HKD (RM7,944 – 8,555) in angpow money.
