A huge explosion at a chemical factory in the Kapar industrial area of Klang, Selangor, has sparked concern as yellow smoke that causes eye irritation rose out from the building. The explosion also caused several nearby factories to suffer damage.

According to a report by Harian Metro, the Selangor Police Chief, Datuk Hussein Omar Khan, shared that his department received a call at about 4:45pm yesterday (January 20) in regards to the incident.

Investigations found that the explosion was believed to have been caused by the chemical stored inside the factory compound.

“There were damages to the factory building and nearby factories. However, so far, no casualties have been reported. The fire department and the Hazardous Material Unit (Hazmat) are conducting investigations at the scene,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Assistant Director of Operations, Ahmad Mukhlis Mokhtar, said that the Hazmat team that arrived at the location confirmed that the burning material was recycled acid, with a tanker truck destroyed in the explosion.

“The Operations Commander reported that his team arrived at the location and there was yellow smoke that was causing eye irritation. The Hazmat team tested the air and found that the air was in normal condition,” he said.

He said that the Hazmat team was still monitoring the location and waiting for the Department of Environment to arrive at the location.
