The high cost of living has undoubtedly changed the way we live as we are constantly trying to cut down on our expenses in any way we can. Can’t eat nice food every week anymore!

However, for this family in Perlis, the struggle to make ends meet was too much that they decided to take their own lives.

According to The Star, the family of four made a decision to commit a mass suicide in order to escape the financial mess they were in.

The report stated that three corpses – belonging to the father, 66, mother, 64, and daughter, 35 – were found floating in a river at Kampung Belat Batu, Arau. The police found out that the tragic incident happened under Lebuhraya Kuala Perlis Changloon Kg Belat Batu’s flyover.

According to the police, they received a phone call from a witness who said that the eldest son of the family was found alive close to the river, the next morning.

The report further revealed that the family committed suicide yesterday (Thursday, 18 October 2018) because they couldn’t cope with the high cost of living and their piling debts.

The son who survived the incident said that his family intended to consume poison and jump into the river. However, he had changed his mind at the very last minute and climbed out of the river. Unfortunately, the rest of his family were swept away by the river’s current.

As of now, the police shared that the incident is still under investigation.

It’s sad that the family had to resort to a mass suicide in order to escape their financial woes. We extend our condolences to the son and hope the souls of the deceased will rest in peace.
