After over three decades in uniform, Malaysia’s Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay, is hanging up his badge.

Speaking at the launch of his biography, From Pendang to Bukit Aman: A Journey of Integrity, Ayob Khan announced that Sunday (July 26) will mark his final day in the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), ending a career spanning almost 35 years.

Ayob joked about making roti canai after retirement

Known for leading some of the country’s most high-profile criminal and narcotics investigations, Ayob Khan has held several key positions throughout his career, including Johor police chief, director of the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department, director of the Criminal Investigation Department, and, since June 2023, Deputy Inspector-General of Police.

“It has been a long journey,” he said.

“Sunday will be my last day in the force after serving with the police for nearly 35 years.”

But while many are wondering what comes next, Ayob Khan had an unexpected answer.

“Maybe you’ll see me wearing a sarong and a white shirt, flipping roti canai at a mamak restaurant,” he joked.

A second book from Ayob may be on its way

Ayob, however, revealed that several job offers have already come his way, but the veteran policeman said he has no immediate plans beyond taking a well-earned break.

“There have been a few offers, but I haven’t thought about them yet. For now, I just want to rest,” he told the media on Thursday night (July 23).

Retirement, however, may not mean the end of his storytelling. Ayob hinted that a second book could be in the works, in which readers can expect to dive deeper into the operations and experiences that shaped his decades-long career, offering the public a closer look at life behind some of Malaysia’s most significant police investigations.

Ayob Khan was born on July 26, 1966, in Pendang, Kedah, and he joined PDRM in 1993, when he was 27.
