Malaysian actress Zarina Anjoulie believes women have every right to reject potential partners who earn significantly less than they do.

In a comment posted on Threads, Zarina revealed that her past marriages taught her difficult lessons about financial responsibility in relationships. According to her, many men expect women to struggle alongside them financially, only to later leave them unsupported during challenging times.

“Men tend to brainwash about struggling together”

Zarina was responding to a viral Threads post in which a Malaysian woman earning RM8,000 a month asked whether it was acceptable to reject a man who made only RM2,000.

“There’s nothing wrong with rejecting a man who earns RM2,000 if the woman earns RM8,000. I’ve been married twice and experienced the same thing,” she wrote.

She claimed that some men tend to “brainwash” women into believing that enduring hardship together is a fundamental part of love and commitment. However, she argued that when women face their own financial difficulties, few men are willing to step in and provide support.

“They will convince us that we should go through struggles together. But when you’re the one struggling, no man will come and support you. And if you ask for help, most of them will label you a ‘gold digger’,” she added.

Zarina reminded men to work harder

The actress also encouraged men to work harder to improve their financial standing before pursuing serious relationships. She emphasised that there is no shame in taking on extra jobs or “side hustles” to increase one’s income.

“Why should women have to suffer with men? Tell him to come back when he earns more money. If you can do it, there’s no reason he can’t do it too,” she said.

Zarina further stated that roles such as e-hailing drivers or selling “bundle” (second-hand) clothing are respectable ways to boost income, provided the individual is hardworking. She noted that while there is nothing embarrassing about earning extra money, what truly matters is a man’s effort and initiative.
