How would you react if your manager starts sending you inappropriate text messages late at night – even worse commenting on the clothes you wear at the workplace?
Should you report it, what would be the consequences? What if your assaulter was someone in power? Will the culprit be apprehended or will it instead backfire on you, ultimately costing you your career?
Recently, a shocking anonymous email surfaced alleging predatory culture at business radio station BFM 89.9, cover-ups by the management of sexual harassment as well as the senior management’s failure to take action.
The allegations prompted a statement released by BFM’s founder, addressing these allegations.
According to Malek Ali, the station has so far been unable to confirm any of the allegations made by the anonymous email.
Stressing that the organization took workplace sexual harassment and misconduct seriously, Malek wrote that “internal investigations are initiated whenever one is made”.
“Our practice has been to offer employees discretion and fairness, and we take action when we learn of unacceptable behaviour.”
With the culprits and the victims named in the now widely circulated email, Malek stated that they have been unable to confirm any of the situations described.
Malek disclosed that BFM is reviewing its reporting mechanism to ensure continued access to safe channels for such matters to be reported and addressed.
“We continue to look for ways to improve our workplace to support and protect any member who comes forward with information or allegations about misconduct.”
The note also alleged of a rape by an unidentified employee, which led to the assaulter’s termination. But it didn’t lead to any further action taken against him.
The person further claimed that reporting to NGOs made no impact either as they were aligned with the station and the accused.
Assuring the public of BFM’s commitment to handling such cases will be given priority by the organization, Malek voiced the company’s commitment to eradicating predatory culture and allowing victims to speak out.
“We are committed to providing a safe environment in which all members of our community can work without fear and threat of sexual harassment.”
Let’s hope that the right course of action will be taken should anyone be found guilty of sexual harassment. Meanwhile, the whole nation is watching to see if BFM will see through this issue duly with the same values they espouse.
