Authorities have asked everyone to be extra vigilant regarding scams that revolves around Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF). Scams regarding EPF started garnering more attention following the government’s announcement of fund withdrawal from the Account 2 savings of EPF.

According to Sinar Harian, text message syndicates are on the rise after Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had announced that application of fund withdrawals from Account 2 can be carried out through i-Lestari.

Apart from text messages, scammers are also cunningly using fake websites and phone calls to lure unsuspecting individuals into their trap.

“There are a lot of scammers and rumours going around, especially through WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter. Please know that the EPF only communicates to the public via our website, and our official social media channels,” said Chief EPF Officer Alizakri Alias, in a statement issued on their official website.

“Everyone needs to be aware and avoid carrying out transactions with individuals who claim that they represent an organisation. Do not give out any data that can be manipulated by scammers,” cautioned Datuk Seri Mohd Zakaria.

Police from the Cybercrime and Multimedia Department will be tracking down the origins of this scam and stern actions will be taken towards scammers to ensure that vulnerable individuals don’t get manipulated.
