A 67-year-old Malaysian man has been making the cross-country trip to Singapore from Johor twice a month for the past 10 years in order to visit his son in prison there.

The Malaysian father, Cheong Kah Pin shared that each time, he began his trips at 2am and waited in front of the prison for several hours before visitation is allowed to the point that he could tell all the changes that have been happening in the area for the past decade.

Highlighted in a video by 8world News yesterday (22 April 2023), Cheong shared that he chose to ride alone at 2am so that he could ride slowly as it’s the safer thing to do, as he is already old and afraid that he would knock into others or the other way around.

Showing the spot in front of the prison that he always sit at while waiting until 8am to be able to visit his son, Cheong asserted,

“I miss him (his son) and seeing him in person is all I want. I wait regardless of how long. I’m happy as long as I get see…”

His eldest son, Cheong Chun Yin is currently serving a lifetime prison sentence in Singapore since 2008 for trafficking heroin.

Aged 24 at the time of arrest, Chun Yin reportedly was told to bring in gold bars for his boss which ended up containing drugs in the parcel. Chun Yin denied knowing that he was carrying drugs and maintained that stance until today.

He was subsequently convicted and sentenced to death but in 2015, it was reduced to life imprisonment and 15 strokes of the cane.

Cheong shared that he was devastated when he knew of his son’s predicament and sold three of his houses so that he could have enough money for the legal fees to save Chun Yin. Speaking of his son, Cheong asserted,

“Whatever he did, business or other matters, he believed others without doubts… He believed the other party and didn’t check… Now he’s paying for it.”

There’s a glimmer of hope for the father and son to reunite as in 2024, Chun Yin has the chance for his sentence to be reviewed for remission by Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs as he had already served 20 years in prison by then.
