Is it just me, or is everyone in your group of friends getting married? That is, everyone except you. Well, at least there’s a lot of wedding invitations to fill your weekends, right? Although these invitations can be quite mafan as you’d have to think of what gifts to get for the newlyweds.

No worries though, as here at WORLD OF BUZZ, we’re all about helping our awesome readers out so we got in touch with a few newlyweds (and some oldlyweds too, just in case!) and asked them to share what gifts they REALLY want for their wedding day.

1. A simple hotel voucher for them to spend some private time together

“We didn’t have much time spent together before the wedding..”

“Like us, most newlyweds don’t put any expectations when it comes to wedding gifts. Just being there to share and celebrate our joyous union is enough. That’s what friends and families are for right?

We did receive a few lovely gifts from our guests and we are really thankful for them! The most thoughtful gift has got to be a hotel voucher that we used for a quick getaway after the ceremony. Planning a wedding takes a lot of hard work and sleepless nights that we didn’t have that much time to spend together before the reception. Furthermore, we didn’t save up for a honeymoon because we felt that the money is better spent on the necessities for living and building a family together <3.

That’s why the hotel voucher was really thoughtful, as it really shows that the person knew us personally or have been in the situation before. It doesn’t even need to be some grand holiday voucher to Bali or anything, just a simple getaway nearby would still be awesome! Even an Airbnb on the same road as our house also can :P”

2. Practicality trumps novelty

“Why gift us something we’ll never use lah…”

“We’ve been married for 7 years now and are blessed with 3 beautiful kids together. Not exactly a newlywed, but hey, at least we can tell you what gifts are actually worthwhile in the long run 😀

Let me get this out first, stop gifting newlyweds a plate and cup set lah! We literally got 10 of those from our reception and frankly, all of them have been collecting dust in our storeroom for the past 7 years. I swear, there’s something about our society and plate sets.

Always give something that newlyweds would actually use. Instead of a waffle-maker, why not gift a toaster instead? We got both as wedding gifts and we’ve been using the toaster every single day! The waffle-maker? Once.

Think about some necessities that the newlyweds need and that’ll be the perfect gift! If you want my recommendation, why not gift a vacuum? It’s definitely a necessity, not just in the short run as the couple would be cleaning up their new house after the wedding but also in the long run. A good vacuum would last a lifetime you know, especially the ones by Panasonic.

3. Just wing it with some Ringgits

“FYI, Malaysian weddings are super expensive…”

“Actually, the most useful gift we got for our wedding was Ang Pow packets. Now I know why our ancestors started the tradition of money giving during weddings :P. FYI, Malaysian weddings are super expensive, and I mean incredibly, ridiculously expensive!

Regardless of what religion or race you came from, there’s this expectation for you to have a minimum of 500 guests and the food must be 5 Star Hotel level quality at your wedding. Although wanting money as a wedding gift may seem materialistic, but I can confirm that it’ll help the newlyweds A LOT! No matter the amount, it’ll definitely help them to kickstart their journey as a married couple together.

Sure, it may feel a little less personal giving Ang Pow packets as a gift but if you don’t personally know what they need or want, just wing it with some Ringgits and they’ll be super grateful!”

4. Store vouchers or credits for the win!

“It’s a win-win situation…”

“Sure, seeing a huge stash of presents on your wedding day can be very exciting. However, from our experience unwrapping them, they’ll confirm be identical presents. We’re pretty sure a few bought from the same store too because a few gifts have the same exact wrapping papers on them!

Well, if you’re gonna buy a gift for a newlywed at the store in your local mall, why not just gift them a store voucher or credits so that they can pick what to buy themselves?

It’ll eliminate the chance of them already having the item or not liking it. Win-win lah right?”
