A 32-year-old accountant who had reportedly accumulated more than RM200,000 in debt to multiple loan sharks tragically fell to his death from the 24th floor of his apartment.

The man, Lin Zu Cheng (transliteration), had taken a half-day off on 7 August and returned to the apartment he shared with his girlfriend of 11 years. He later fell from the apartment and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ah longs hound victim’s girlfriend and family over unpaid debts

According to China Press, the victim’s girlfriend, Miss Liang (transliteration), said she was surprised to see his car parked at their apartment when she returned home, as he would usually come home late.

She initially assumed he was at work, but later realised he had died after seeing a message in the residents’ group chat and informed his family.

Following Lin’s death, his family reportedly began receiving calls from loan sharks, who repeatedly pressured them to repay his outstanding debts.

More than 30 trading platforms, many linked to online gambling, were found on his phone, with reports suggesting he may have fallen victim to an online scam and borrowed from loan sharks to repay his debts.

Miss Liang revealed that Lin had borrowed RM40,000 from her over the past few years and another RM10,000 from her mother. She said he would often tell them that he needed extra cash flow for his online business.

She later received a call from a loan shark demanding payment for a RM30,000 debt that Lin had reportedly owed. According to her, the loan shark demanded RM10,000 on the same day and another RM10,000 the following day, with further payments required until the debt, including interest, was fully settled.

The victim’s girlfriend filed a police report

Hoping to put an end to the harassment, Miss Liang lodged a police report at the Sentul police station on 10 August. She said the officer taking her statement even instructed her to contact the loan sharks while she was at the station.

She also sought help from Lai Chun Chian, an aide to Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng, in hopes of getting the loan sharks to stop harassing the family.

“The person knew that I had lodged a police report and spoke politely, saying that they simply wanted to recover the money owed,” she said.

Meanwhile, Lin’s mother also appealed to the loan sharks to leave the family alone as she was unable to repay her late son’s debts.
