The former President of Uruguay, José Mujica was dubbed ‘the world’s poorest president’ because of his generosity and modest lifestyle. It was reported that José would donate a huge chunk of his salary to charity while maintaining a small portion just enough to live by. So humble!

In case you didn’t know, José was the president of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015 where under his leadership, the legalisation of gay marriage and marijuana took place. Since he constantly donates 80 per cent of his $12,000 (approx. RM49,200) monthly salary to charities, José is far from the richest politicians in the world.

In fact, he still lives on a flower farm with his beloved wife instead of the presidential palace and drives a 1987 Volkswagon Beetle.

After stepping down from the presidency, José continued to serve Uruguay as a senator until last Tuesday (14 August) where he officially resigned. Technically, his tenure is until 2020 but for personal reasons, he had decided to retire. Having said that, he is still determined to continue fighting the elite and corruption in the country.

“I’d say it’s exhaustion after the long journey,” the 83-year-old former guerrilla leader said in a letter read out to the Senate chamber.

Perhaps what’s more heartwarming was that José refused to accept his state pension after his resignation in hopes that the money could be used for the betterment of his people. Aww!

This news has garnered the attention of many Malaysians as people started comparing José with former PM Najib Razak and current PM Tun Mahathir. Some netizens also praised José for putting the well-being of the people first before him.

“This is the kind of leader that Malaysians really want, not someone who has boxes of cash stashed inside his home,” a netizen said.

Ouch!
