It is common sense not to leave our belonging such as handphone unattended or to be extra cautious when carrying a handbag lest someone steals them. But it looks like we have yet another thing to worry about now.

Last Saturday (Nov 5, 2022) a car passenger unfortunately had their phone stolen by a man while the car they were in was stopped at a traffic light.

The incident took place at Jalan Genting Klang, Setapak and was caught in a video that went viral.

Snatch and flee

The eight-second video shows a man on a motorcycle creeping up from behind the car, reaching its open passenger side window, then reaching in to snatch the passenger’s phone.

It happened so quickly that the people in the car did not know what to do. The driver maneuvered their car to give chase but it appears impossible with the traffic situation.

Whereas the passenger who had their phone stolen was left grappling air as the thief sped off.

Wangsa Maju District Police Chief Superintendent Ashari Abu Samah said the police received a report from the victim on November 5.

The window was open

“According to the victim, the window was open while they were in the front passenger seat when the vehicle stopped at a traffic light.”

“The suspect riding a motorcycle came from the rear and grabbed the victim’s mobile phone before fleeing,” he said.

Ashari added, acting on intelligence information, the police managed to arrest a 32-year-old man believed to be the suspect.

“We also managed to seize the stolen item which is a mobile phone. The suspect was remanded for seven days until November 14 for further investigation according to Section 392 of the Penal Code.”

He also advised the public to always be careful and vigilant lest they also fall victim to these criminals.
