A monumental period of teenagers born in the year 2006, the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations officially began today, 30 January 2023. However, portions of the English and Malay language tests started prior to today, including both the oral and listening segments.
Specifically for English language, the official listening test was conducted yesterday, 29 January, for students all across the country. And while such a fact may not seem rather interesting to the public at large, a reference to American guitarist and jazz musician Kyle Green has caught the artistes’ attention, with him commenting on the SPM 2024 exam on his Instagram page @kylegreenmusic.
In a series of Instagram stories uploaded to his account, Green stated that he received an inbox full of direct messages, emails, and phone calls from various SPM students in Malaysia. According to Green, they had shared with the guitarist that a character of himself was part of their test in the listening portion for their English language exam.
“They listened to an interview where the interviewer was interviewing a musician named Kyle Green, who is a jazz musician or something along those lines. To my recollection, I don’t remember such an interview that I’ve done, so I’m imagining that it was some fictional thing that was made up,” said Green in his Instagram story.
Speaking on the aftermath of discovering his inclusion in the paper, Green stated that SPM students proceeded to find him online and send him a flurry of messages. At the same time, Green cautioned users to be aware of people who created fake accounts to imitate him in the moment.
“To the kids in Malaysia, I hope you did well for the test. If you didn’t, I hope you study harder next time. And to those who have expressed interest in my music and shared kind words, I appreciate that and hope you enjoy. That’s it – just wanted to check in. It’s been a crazy morning, so all the best to all of you!” he said at the end of his series of stories.

After doing some sleuthing of our own, WORLD OF BUZZ can confirm that Green, or a fictionalised version of the artiste, was indeed referenced in the English language listening test for SPM 2024.
