While most of us were busy studying for our UPSR exams when we were 12-years-old, this gifted pianist is representing the country on a global platform!

Out of hundreds of applicants who sent in compositions for the International Commonwealth Composition Challenge, ten finalists aged between 10-17 were chosen, including Eleanor Inn, a 12-year-old pianist who is the second-youngest contestant and only Malaysian representative competing against contestants from UK, Canada, India, Australia, Singapore, among other countries.

“Dear Fate”

Eleanor’s moving piece is titled “Dear Fate”, a beautiful composition that brings a meaningful message in this challenging pandemic period.

“Throughout the composition, the patient goes from being infected, to gradually recovering – leading the family member to gain hope, but in the end, his heart stills,” explained the bright young performer to WOB. But the story is more than just a narrative. It points to the way some citizens have been treating this pandemic as a joke.

“Many people, especially students-are taking Covid-19 too lightly. They’re constantly joking about our friends possibly contracting the virus as we haven’t been personally affected by it. But this is no laughing matter. There are over a million deaths worldwide; and probably more, unrecorded. As responsible students, we need to follow the rules-and-regulations,” added the passionate pianist.

Eleanor’s composition has earned her the golden opportunity of being one of the 12 talented musicians selected worldwide to pursue a course with Purcell School, a prestigious music institution, and Britain’s oldest music school in London.

Bring Malaysia That Win

This year’s challenge includes three awards. One of them is “The Audience Vote”, an award determined by the number of votes contestants garner online between the period of 19 October to 26 October (next Monday). Currently, our young Malaysian composer’s biggest competition is a finalist from India.

“Based on the Youtube views, I am neck-and-neck with a contestant from India, with 2,400+ views each. It will be a close fight. They might have the advantage with their 1.4 billion population, but I can bring home a Malaysia win with all your votes!”, said the hopeful artist.

With only one weekend left, let’s all support our young local talents and vote by clicking on this Google form and choosing the option titled, Eleanor Inn Rei Shuen (Malaysia) – ‘Dear Fate’ to help her secure that win! At the time of writing, Eleanor’s submission has garnered over 3,000 views. Watch the artist herself perform this piece on Youtube.

Kudos to Eleanor for making her country proud.
