From military to videography to rescuing victims trapped on the mountain, drones have gone through intensive engineering so that they can function in a variety of industries.

Realising the benefit of drones, Malaysia has expressed its interest in using them for the postal and courier industry.

Imagine having same-day shopping delivered straight to your doorstep by a drone!

The minister of Communications and Multimedia, Gobind Singh Deo has stated that drones will be adopted and used in the postal and courier industry within five years. He explained,

“Malaysia does not want to be left behind in the mainstream of modernisation, and Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has also said that our country must look at new technologies like drones and artificial intelligence.”

He gave an example where drones can be used to deliver medical supplies to rural areas during emergencies and send fertilisers for agriculture. Gobind also stated that the ministry would continue to support Pos Malaysia and MCMC to improve the postal industry in Malaysia to be on par with other developed nations. He elaborated,

“We will continue to make safety in the use of drones in the postal service a priotity, (but) there may be times when accidents happen due to technical issues. This is in line with existing regulations as set by the aviation industry.”

Adopting drones will undoubtedly increase the effectiveness of our postal sector. So expect to receive your online purchase delivered via drone within the next five years. Alamak, I shop so much, I need a bigger drone to deliver lah ni!
