On nomination day (28 April 2018), many unexpected things had happened. For instance:

  • Tian Chua got disqualified
  • Datin Paduka Dr Tan Yee Kew forgot her MyKad and was denied entry

This was what went down in Peninsula Malaysia but in East Malaysia, things took a serious turn when 84 candidates of an opposition party were unable to contest for GE14, reported NST.

What happened, you ask?

Well, a local opposition party in Sabah, United Sabah National Organisation (New) (Usno), was robbed of their deposit money worth a whopping RM870,000 that was meant for their 84 GE14 candidates. That’s a lot of money!

One of Usno’s advisors (whose name was not disclosed) was entrusted with the money to make the payment on Friday (27 April 2018) before nomination day (28 April 2018) but the man didn’t turn up.

Apparently, the EC extended the deadline until Friday midnight for the payment and yet the man didn’t show up. How odd?

Upon hearing the news, his party members went looking for him at his home in Kota Belud the next day (28 April 2018) but he was nowhere to be found. Thus, they deduced that the 38-year-old fraud had left with the money he swindled.

Usno New’s supreme council member, John Kisil then lodged a police report in hopes that the man can be found, according to Malaysiakini.

However, this unfortunate incident has now caused Usno to lose a majority of state and parliamentary seats.

They initially planned to contest in all 60 state seats and 26 parliamentary seats but are now down to two candidates who had to fork out their own money to pay the deposit.

Currently, Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Ramli Din has confirmed the incident and assured that investigations are being carried out to find the man. The police are trying to locate the offender and if they do arrest him, the man will be further investigated under Section 408 of the Penal Code for criminal breach of trust.

Well, let’s hope that the police quickly finds this guy, so he can be convicted for breaching and betraying the trust of his party members.
