It’s no secret that one of the major contributors to the floods in KL is the rubbish clogging our drainage systems. And we don’t even have to ask where that rubbish came from, for Malaysians are known to litter as we please.

So much so, that our differently-abled community members are now trying to help clean up the mess we made.

The 我们是马来西亚人 We are Malaysians Facebook page recently shared a video of a differently-abled man helping to unclog a drain that caused stagnant flooding.

In the video, the man, who only has 1 leg, could be seen balancing on his crutches as he leaned and reached into the stagnant flood waters and pulls out a drenched cardboard box that was clogging the drain there.

Another man could then be seen collecting the trash from the differently-abled man and helping him with whatever remnants of rubbish that remained.

Netizens have since praised the differently-abled man (and those who helped him) for his service to the community while also condemning able-bodied Malaysians for littering and causing the problem.

“This is all because of the TRASH that able-bodied people litter. Until a differently-abled man has to clear the TRASH THAT YOU ALL LITTERED.”

While we are ridiculously thankful to the man for helping to unclog the drain, we can’t help but feel like he wouldn’t have to do that if littering wasn’t so normalised in Malaysia.

Now that we’re experiencing flood after flood, it’s about time we take the whole situation as it is. A consequence of our own actions. Let’s all stop littering and throwing our loose rubbish into designated dustbins, and we’ll see less floods in the future.
