The National Registration Department (JPN) rolled out the New Generation MyKad yesterday (17 September), marking its first major update in more than two decades as the card gets a refresh to keep up with the times.
With around 50 additional security features, replacing your MyKad with the New Generation MyKad will cost just RM10 for standard replacements.
New MyKad no longer comes with Touch ‘n Go functionality
Meanwhile, JPN has also demonstrated Malaysians how to use BUDI95 with the new MyKad, reminding them to keep the chip facing up when inserting the card at the pump, as the chip is now located on the back of the card.
Additionally, The New Generation MyKad will no longer come with Touch ‘n Go functionality. However, users can still access the service through the Touch ‘n Go eWallet or a separate Touch ‘n Go card, according to BERNAMA.
“The New Generation MyKad remains the official identity document for Malaysians and can continue to be used for government-related matters as usual, subject to the requirements of the relevant agencies.
The implementation of the new MyKad has also taken into account the various systems and services that use MyKad, so Malaysians’ daily transactions and activities will not be affected,” JPN said.
The new MyKad is also expected to improve identity verification while reducing the risk of forgery and misuse of identity documents. JPN said its enhanced security features help strengthen the card against forgery, while the QR code supports verification and enforcement needs.
Existing MyKad still remains valid for daily transactions
Applications for the new-generation MyKad can be made at 40 JPN branches with printing facilities, where the card can be printed and issued on the same day.
For JPN branches without printing facilities, applications can still be submitted, but the card will take five working days to be ready.
Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has also advised Malaysians not to rush to JPN offices to replace their existing MyKad, as current cards will remain valid for daily transactions.
