It isn’t easy to save money for a wedding and it gets even harder when you don’t have a stable source of income! However, this Malaysian guy proved that he could do it and saved RM18,000 in a year with an average salary of RM1,400 a month while living in Kuala Lumpur.

In a Twitter thread that has gone viral, Luqman Afifi shares how he did it even though he only works as a freelance video editor, and he said that he didn’t always have many jobs. Sometimes, his income would be less than RM1,400 as there weren’t enough projects in that month.

The 24-year-old was determined to save money for his wedding to his beloved and so he pushed himself hard as he knew that he needed money for the event. He said, “I wasn’t choosy over my projects. Any project that I could get, I would do it, even if it only paid RM50.”

He also said that he opened two bank accounts, one for his savings and another for spending. He explained that he left the ATM card for the savings account in his kampung and would only take out 20% of every payment he gets while the rest would be kept in the savings bank account. Good way to stop yourself from overspending!

“During this time, I would avoid any outings or gatherings that would require me to spend money like water as well,” he added. Seeing as he lived with another eight to nine other housemates, he said that this helped him to reduce the rental cost as well and since there were so many of them, they would pool their money together to cook and eat at home.

“We would take out RM10 per person and cook simple food such as chicken cooked in sambal and sometimes with egg. But this was better than eating nasi bujang (white rice with a sunny side up egg) and by doing so, I only spent about RM100 each month for food and petrol for my motorcycle. Luckily I don’t smoke, so I didn’t have to set aside a budget for this,” Luqman wrote.

He said that he did this for a year so that he would have enough money for his wedding and he said that discipline is key to ensuring that this saving plan works. Luqman said that he was lucky enough to get two big projects before his wedding which enabled him to earn an extra RM4,000 to RM5,000 for his wedding funds.

Luckily, his wife and her family were understanding and said that they did not need a big wedding banquet as long as the couple was happy. The majority of netizens who read his thread praised his determination and perseverance to save money for his wedding, saying that not many people would be able to do the same in such a short time. Although there were a few who criticised him, Luqman said that he shared his experience as he just wanted to share his tips with his friends.

Kudos to Luqman for being able to save that much money for his wedding!
