It sometimes seems like kids lately are becoming more and more daring due to parents becoming more lenient, especially considering issues like school children openly vaping in public to the mum who defended her rude daughter.

This has, in turn, led to this generation of kids being termed the ‘snowflake generation’.

But the debate still stands, are the parents to blame for making these kids the way that they are today?

A good example would be how a teacher recently received messages from a mother who was not happy with the fact that her kid had homework to do during the holidays. In a post shared by the teacher’s friend, Izz (@izskyline) on his Twitter page on 17th August, he showcased a screenshot of the messages the teacher had received.

Izz captions her posting with, “Pity my friend. As a teacher, he gave homework to his students for the school holidays until a parent had texted him. I used to have so much homework to the point where I used to bring it along when I went back to my village. But parents lately, see for yourself.”

The parent’s message goes, “Greetings, teacher. I was just checking my son’s homework. He said he had a lot of homework to do during the Raya break.

It doesn’t feel right for the school to be doing this. During the festivities, we should be spending time with our family that we’ve not met in a long time.

When he’s married, he’ll have to take turns celebrating Raya with the in laws, hence we’d only see him once every two years. How do we teach him character and manners if he is to ignore our relatives to do homework?

Teachers always complain about a student’s morals while they’re at school, saying it’s the parents’ responsibility to teach them. Hence, how are parents supposed to carry out that responsibility of teaching him character if he’s doing homework during the festive seasons?”

Netizens were quick to defend the teacher, considering the fact that when most of us were in school, we had insane amounts of homework during the holidays. Sure we complained about it back then, but it taught us how to manage and value time.

This comment goes, “The problem is, have parents nowadays been to school before? Have they never had homework?”

This comment reads, “These are the situations mothers should learn how to tackle. Teach your kids time management. If the child complains about the teacher giving them too much homework, teach them how to be polite with the teacher. If a small challenge like this is too hard to handle, pity, the child will grow up weak.”

Other netizens, on the other hand, including a teacher, agreed with the parent.

This comment says, “I agree with the parent, school holidays are meant for realistic lessons, outdoor exploration, visiting historical sites, interacting with relatives, neighbours and the community so that the child can build social skills and enhance his EQ (emotional intelligence).”

This comment goes, “As a teacher, I agree with this parent. We don’t want to burden the students until they’re still doing homework during the holidays. The problem is the administration, who push teachers to push students to achieve for the sake of the school.”

Valid arguments were made on both sides, though the question still remains, should kids be subjected to homework during school and festive holidays?

Izz’s posting has since garnered over 2,500 retweets.
