With the Wuhan virus spreading like wildfire, the Chinese government has taken strict action to ensure that the public stays indoors to contain the viral outbreak. But in a country where an estimated 25 million people run regularly, it will take more than a global epidemic to stop these runners from maintaining their active lifestyles.

One Chinese marathon runner from Hangzhou recently gained attention from netizens online after he shared his experience of running 50km in his apartment flat by just doing laps around two massage tables in his room!

According to South China Morning Post, the dedicated runner who goes by the name of Pan Shancu, is a Chinese medicine health therapist and a well-known amateur marathon runner, clocking in 2:59:00 as his personal best.

Sick of being stuck inside for such an extended period of time, Pan said he recently ran 6,250 loops in one room!

“I have not been outside for many days, today I cannot bear sitting down any more!” wrote Pan on Chinese social media site, Weibo. “Let’s run laps around the two massage tables in the room, then! Yes, one lap is about 8m – I ran 50km, did it in 4:48:44, sweated all over, feels great!”

The runner even included a video of himself running and a screengrab from the running app he used to track his time and distance as proof! The creative marathoner soon went viral, with his post accumulating nearly 26,000 reads. Netizens all over China proceeded to comment on the hilariously impressive post.

Some runners were relieved to find that they weren’t the only crazy ones, “I though it was just me doing this crazy indoor running.”

Another netizens even shared their own experiences, “I did a 5.2km run yesterday in a 20m long loop. I managed to not get dizzy but the dog was barking like crazy for 40 minutes.”

One netizen shared his concern for the neighbours living below Pan, “the people living below are going to kill you!” But Pan explained that he makes little to no noise when running as his technique involves striking the ground softly with his forefoot instead of stomping with his heels.

Modern problems require modern solutions. If the isolated folk of China can keep an active lifestyle amidst their lockdown, that leaves no excuse for us to not exercise! What do you guys think of this?
