When one chooses to propose to the love of their lives, there are many things to be considered. Yes, besides deciding to spend the rest of your life committed to a person, an engagement ring is crucial.

Choosing an engagement ring is not the easiest task as there is always a risk that your other half may not like the ring you pick. This is why many individuals spend plenty of time researching before emptying their wallets on a shiny rock.

However, one man thought he had done a good job at picking what he thought was an ideal ring for his fiancée. In fact, he spent his 10 years of savings on it. But sadly, it did not do the job of satisfying his partner.

A man from the US, who is unnamed, took to Reddit to share the devastating story. He revealed that he spent $20,000 (RM82,600) on an engagement ring but his fiancée did not like it one bit.

“She wanted a natural stone, not a lab-grown diamond.”

In his Reddit post, he asked for the opinion of other netizens. “AITA [Am I The A**hole] for buying my fiancée a lab-grown diamond and refusing to exchange it for a natural stone?”

The man added that his 27-year-old fiancée was initially happy with her engagement ring. But moments later it all when down south when she asked him how much he had spent on the ring.

“I told her that I had spent about $20,000 on it that I had been squirreling away for the last 10 years,” he said.

“Firstly, I had always been open in my distaste for the natural diamond industry, and secondly because I had employed the assistance of her friends and mother and everyone agreed that she wouldn’t care if the diamond was lab-grown.”

The man said he had tried explaining to his partner countless times to justify his reason to choose a lab-grown diamond.

“It is better for the environment, I know the exact origin of the stone, so I know it isn’t a conflict stone, and ultimately it is better value for the money and I wanted to get her the most beautiful ring possible.”

In the end, the man still refused to give in and told his fiancée that she could give the ring back and end the relationship.

“She called me an asshole and went to stay the night with her parents. Since then I have received multiple texts from her friends telling me to just acquiesce and exchange the ring (and, ultimately, I will if it means saving the relationship) but I just feel like this is something worth being firm on.”
