Gurmit Singh, the 59-year-old Singaporean comedian and entertainer revealed in a recent interview in Kuala Lumpur that the idea for his character Hero Singh originated when he and Erik Ong from Popcorn Studios were discussing ideas for the next joke, as Phua Chu Kang had become too repetitive and required a new role. Gurmit was naturally drawn to the concept of playing Hero Singh because of his mixed Sikh and Chinese-Japanese heritage.
