Barisan Nasional (BN) will push for the reinstatement of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) after the 16th General Election (GE16), with BN Chairman, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi describing it as the best tax regime to ensure fairness and strengthen the country’s revenue.

Zahid said BN’s stance is clear, but the party is willing to allow the current Sales and Service Tax (SST) system to continue for the time being.

BN’s position is to bring back GST. SST, we will give it a chance first. There are still two years left,” he shared.

“But after GE16, we demand that GST, which is the best tax regime, must be reinstated in this country so that the people receive greater allocations and experience fairness regardless of economic status.”

Further commenting, Zahid said there is clear evidence of GST’s effectiveness as it has been implemented in more than 155 countries.

“Malaysia is among eight countries still using SST… we once implemented GST before reverting to SST. Yes, we understand that was someone’s promise before.”

“For now, we support its implementation. But after GE16, we must be firm in implementing GST. It must be implemented in our country,” he added.
