We all know that it is illegal to record in the cinema, even if it’s for something as harmless as posting it on an Instagram story because you may give away an important part of the movie.
Nevertheless, even after several warnings by the authorities, Malaysians seem to think that this isn’t a serious offence, but recently, a Malaysian artist came under a lot of heat after she posted a series of IG stories of new The Lion King live-action film.
Lobak Merak wrote that the businesswoman came under fire after a netizen called her out for uploading several clips to her IG story. In a tweet which has now been deleted, he wrote,
“So no one isn’t gonna say anything about Neelofa recording The Lion King and posted it on her insta story? Or is it because she is a celebrity (that) she can do whatever she wants?”
Spoiler alert: The picture below contains a scene from The Lion King, please read at your own risk.
Needless to say that as the tweet gained attention, TGV and GSC cinemas responded as they were tagged in it. TGV wrote in response to the tweet,
“Do you have any information on which cinema location? We take allegations of piracy very seriously.”

Meanwhile, GSC said that they have reported Neelofa’s offence to Disney for further action. FYI, Disney is the movie distributor of The Lion King.
Nonetheless, some netizens claimed that it wasn’t a big deal because she didn’t record the whole movie. What’s your take on this?
On the other hand, one person asked why is it hard for us to put our phones away during a movie. Following the backlash, the actress deleted the movie clips and issued an apology for her mishap. She was quoted by Harian Metro as saying,
“I hope more Malaysians will watch the movie as it’s a perfect family movie. I hope that the public learns from my mistake and be careful in the future.”
All in all, we hope Neelofa and all Malaysians will learn from this lesson that you can’t record clips of a movie and upload it on social media because it is illegal.
