WORLD OF BUZZ reports on a sexual harassment incident that took place between an international ride-hailing app driver and the 19-year-old passenger who was sexually groped and molested.
Taking place on June 7, 2022, the victim booked a ride-hailing car ride at 6pm to head over to Imago Mall (located in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah).
Her ride was a black Nissan Navara pickup truck, and she sat in the rear passenger seat.
During the journey, the male driver insisted that she sit right in front, which she refused. He then completely halted the vehicle in the middle of the road and coerced her to sit in the front passenger seat, or else he will not move the vehicle.
In the report, she recounts: “As he continued with the journey, the traffic congestion at Jalan Tuan Fuad Stephen was quite bad (standstill) – it was during this time, that the driver held my hand and proceeded to put the seat belt on me purposefully brushing his hands over my chest.
He forcefully pulled my hand to touch his private parts while kissing my hand several times.
I tried to resist by pulling my hand away, but the driver’s grip was firm.”
“He also (tried to) touch my private parts and stroked my back, to the point he inserted his hands into my underwear (from the back).”
The victim’s friend, who WORLD OF BUZZ is in touch with, shared her Instagram Stories snapshots and described how “(the driver) was using ‘lewd’ language and expressed interest in (the victim’s) body. “He even declared to marry her,” as the friend described the story on her Instagram account.
The friend shares how the victim started a video call with her boyfriend, and the boyfriend was warning the man to stop doing what he was doing, but the driver did not heed his calls.
“Once we arrived at Imago Mall, I immediately made the payment and distanced myself from his car,” the victim said in the draft police report.
In a WhatsApp screenshot between the victim and her friend, the victim tells how she had called the driver later in the evening and was angry. “He admitted that he did something wrong and that he went overboard.”
The friend described how the victim was crying from her traumatic ordeal and even called the driver to confront him again, to which the driver remorselessly said: “Then what do you want me to do? Marry her? Sure, I can do that!”
The ride-hailing company in questions is determined to be a Russian international technology company that operates taxi aggregation and offers services such as food and goods delivery, purchase, and trucking.
The company claims to ‘make our services more modern, accessible, and safe’ according to their website.
What Happens Now?
WORLD OF BUZZ has reached out to the ride-hailing company in regards to the allegations.
The victim had already made a police report at the nearest police station, however, it was not formalized, as WORLD OF BUZZ learned from the last communication with the victim’s friend that the police officers had offered two solutions:
- That the police officers take action themselves, as they have caught the man, from which the police will bring the man to the victim for him to apologize to her, ‘teach him a lesson’ and lock him up for a week(s).
- Create an official police report, but the victim must be able to attend the court cases, create copies of her identification cards and record a statement.
From the WhatsApp message, it seems the victim informed the police to go with the first option as the second option was deemed to be too much of a hassle.
Whatever it is, we hope that she finds a peaceful resolution to the situation.
