CCTV footage reportedly caught a Form 2 male student stealing money from the day’s sales at a boarding school canteen in Jasin, Melaka, on 22 September.
The incident was discovered after canteen staff noticed that a package containing the day’s sales proceeds, including money from afternoon food sales between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM, was missing from beside the cash register.
Form 2 student admitted to taking canteen money, but came up RM31 short
According to canteen operator Nur Liyana Abdul Khalid, CCTV footage showed the male student wearing a grey kurta, black trousers, and a skullcap before climbing over the counter and taking the money.
She said the student initially claimed he had only taken RM5 after being identified. However, after being questioned several times, he admitted to taking RM749, as seen in the CCTV footage.
“My employee then asked him to return the money, but he only had RM718 left. The remaining RM31 had allegedly been used to repay a debt to a friend,” she said, as quoted by Berita Harian.
Following the incident, the employee who was on duty that night lodged a police report for further action.
Canteen operator claims money had gone missing several times before
Nur Liyana, who has been running the school canteen since 2024, said she had experienced several incidents of missing sales money before, but did not take action due to a lack of evidence.
However, she said the latest incident prompted her to take action, as she felt that such incidents should not happen in a school.
Meanwhile, Jasin District Police Chief Superintendent Lee Robert confirmed that a police report had been lodged over the theft and said investigations are still ongoing.
