Veteran Taiwanese comedian and host Nono was sentenced to two years and six months in jail for one count of attempted rape, more than a decade after the crime took place.
Nono, whose real name is Chen Hsuan-yu, started his career in show business in 1997 but quit last year after his victims spoke up against him during the #MeToo movement, and announced on his Facebook post that he was going to quit the industry to “reflect on himself.”
Nono was sentenced to prison by the Shihlin Court in Taiwan on Tuesday (May 13).
Nono was charged with sexually assaulting six women between 2008 and 2013
He pleaded not guilty to all charges, calling it a “misunderstanding” and blaming all the victims for seducing him.
The court eventually found Nono guilty on only one charge of attempted rape and was cleared of other charges due to lack of evidence, according to Hong Kong 01.
According to the court, Nono, 54, who is married and has a daughter, forced himself on the victim back in February 2011. The former host offered to send the victim home at night after a filming session under the pretence of “getting a midnight snack”. He then drove to a parking lot after getting the food.
At the parking lot, Nono walked over to the passenger seat, forcefully kissed the victim, and groped her.
During the trial, Nono defended himself and denied knowing the victim personally before saying the victim had asked him to send her home.
In previous trials, ET Today reported that one of Nono’s victims said that the former host asked her if “his genitals were big” after showing her his private parts, and after the sexual assault, Nono allegedly said,
“It doesn’t count if I don’t ejaculate. Since you screamed so miserably, I’ll let you go this time.”
According to the prosecutors, Nono showed no remorse and has not apologised to any of the victims, and said his crimes have caused the victims great mental trauma. They also said Nono would use his fame as an artist and work opportunities to get to know the victims before intimidating them with his status in the industry, and forcing them to remain silent about the assaults.
