An elderly man was fined RM2,500 by the Magistrate’s Court in Parit, Perak, on Monday (22 September) after pleading guilty to touching and pinching a woman’s cheek in Perak Tengah earlier this month.

According to a report by Berita Harian, Magistrate Nurul Izalina Rajaai also ordered 63-year-old Samsuri Kamaruddin to serve a 6-month jail sentence should he fail to pay the fine, to which he promptly paid.

She also advised Samsuri to maintain boundaries, including with people he knows.

“We all have acquaintances, but we need to maintain boundaries. With anyone, if not a mahram (a relative with whom a Muslim is permanently forbidden to marry due to their close familial ties or other relationships), there is no need to touch the cheek, touch the hand,”

“Your actions not only degrade the victim’s dignity but also your family members,” she said.

Here’s what happened

Samsuri was charged with using criminal force on a 23-year-old woman with the intention of violating her modesty at 4 PM on 5 September at a grocery store in Bota Kanan, Perak.

Based on the facts of the case, he is charged with touching the left cheek of the woman, who is an employee of the grocery store, twice while the victim was at the payment counter.

The woman scolded Samsuri, but he still touched and pinched the victim’s cheek, causing her to become traumatised and afraid to go to work.

Samsuri’s lawyer appealed for the court to impose a light sentence as he is unemployed and has 2 children who depend on him, all while his wife is suffering from heart disease.
