A woman in China was shocked after finding out that her husband had kept a secret from her for 10 years.

Throughout the decade of their marriage, the woman never knew that her husband had been diagnosed with HIV.

Yunnan AIDS Prevention recently shared a case in which the man, Li, and his wife, Wang, were married to each other without having children. Years later, Li lied that he had liver disease and needed to take medicine.

In December 2021, Li was sentenced to prison for operating a casino.

And the secret came to light during a prison visit

During a prison visit, his wife, Wang, was told by prison staff to prepare HIV medications for Li.  It was then that Wang learned that Li had been diagnosed with HIV in 2011 but had never disclosed it to her since they met.

After their marriage, when Wang asked about taking medication, he simply said he had liver disease and needed medication.

Only then did Li explain that, although he had HIV, he had been actively seeking treatment and was able to suppress the virus from being transmitted to others.

Fortunately, Wang tested negative for HIV

However, she suffered immeasurable mental stress during the testing process out of fear and anxiety, as she had not taken any protective measures during their marriage for several years, and no one knew what might happen.

After learning from his mistakes, Wang sued Li in Songjiang Court, demanding the annulment of the marriage, because Li had maliciously concealed the fact that he had a serious illness. Wang also deemed the marriage doomed and impossible to continue.

In China, the Civil Code clearly states that a party to a marriage still has a premarital obligation to disclose any serious illness that could significantly impact the marriage. Failure to disclose the condition at fault may result in an annulment of the marriage. Li failed to provide evidence proving that he fulfilled this obligation, according to Chinese media.

The court then ruled the marriage annulled.
