Times are tough, and those who can help, they try to help. In this (sometimes) chaotic world, we need a story of kindness to restore our faith in humanity.

Just recently, a TV host in Singapore, Laila White shared a heartwarming story via her Facebook post, which involved a cab driver who eased her life a little during the journey. Laila took the cab from ION Orchard, and the traffic was hectic.

“If you live in Singapore, you know Takashimaya and CTE is A NIGHTMARE of a road.”

Typically, the longer the journey spent on the road, the more you’re likely to be charged for the cab fares. Fortunately, Laila did not have to fork out a huge amount of money for the journey, as the driver, Mr. Lim, was also aware of the nightmarish traffic around the area.

Instead of letting the fares go sky-high, Mr. Lim paused the meter during traffic and he told Laila that he would only resume the meter once the road cleared. Just imagine the amount of money that Laila managed to save thanks to the generosity of Mr. Lim!

And Mr. Lim had his own reasons to pause the meter.

“Uncle came from poor family, it’s not easy to earn money, so don’t worry, if I can help , I’ll help,” Mr Lim told Laila.

“That, my friend, is human connection”

“I choked up”, Laila expressed.

Intrigued by Mr. Lim’s upbringing, Laila asked further about it and the cab driver, who is 70 this year said that he quit school at 10 when his father passed away to look after the family.

“No time for anxiety, worry or try to follow his passion. He had to do the right thing for his mother.”

Mr. Lim also worked as a coolie who carried 100kg rice packs in Clarke Quay, and for a bag, he only earned 20 cents.

Laila eventually paid Mr. Lim extra not out of sympathy, but simply for the kindness and lessons shared during the trip, as well as the human connection that made her day.

“It is invaluable and he made up for my sh*tty morning,” Laila said.

One simple act of kindness can bring a major change into someone’s life and during tough times like this, maybe what we need is simply one act of kindness that will brace us through life challenges.
