Malaysian philanthropist Kuan Chee Heng, more famously known as Uncle Kentang, has shared his belief that wealthy individuals who do not contribute to charitable causes are “poor at heart”.

This comes after someone complained to him about a friend of ‘T20’ status who refused to donate wheelchairs to a health clinic (KK).

Rich in pocket, poor in heart

Taking to his Facebook page, Uncle Kentang explained how a woman had asked her wealthy friend to donate wheelchairs to the KK, only to be told that it is the government’s job to provide such equipment.

“A Chinese lady called me and sadly told me her rich friend, who is a Director at a Bursa Malaysia-listed company, flatly refused to help donate wheelchairs to the Klinik Kesihatan (KK). He told her that it is the responsibility of the government. She was so disappointed and lamented to me. I told her to cool down. Being rich in pocket doesn’t necessarily mean one is rich at heart,” Uncle Kentang wrote.

He also explained that KKs often cater to those in difficult, underprivileged situations by providing medical treatments for those who cannot afford them.

Uncle Kentang went on to share how some wealthy individuals prefer to spend their money on “Musang King”, “gulping whisky”, and being “surrounded by young, sexy and beautiful ladies,” and that it is better not to have expectations of them.

“Never be disappointed by those who do not want to give. The rich are actually poorer than you in life,” he said.

“I told her to leave the rich friend alone. Do not disturb him. He is poorer than many others who have hearts. I told her that 99% of our donors are hawkers, aunties, homemakers, and ordinary folks, not from the rich and famous. These ordinary folks can feel the tempo of the poor, sick, and hungry heartbeats,” he added.

Public support for government facilities

Uncle Kentang later received a call informing him that someone from an “ordinary” background had pledged to donate 10 wheelchairs. He used this as an example of why the public should support government facilities through contributions.

“Government hospitals need support and participation from the public. Do not shy away from them. The help you give matters as it helps patients. Visit the nurses and doctors; they also need our encouragement and motivation. Live by motivating others, and we will have the best nation.”

“Forget about the rich man. Not all rich men are rich at heart, and not all rich men will be like him. There are some good, wealthy men doing charitable work silently too, in their own way.”
