A 71-year-old woman fearlessly faced off with a snatch thief pretending to be a police officer, after the latter had snatched her gold necklace. She used a water bottle to fight back against the robber, leading to him only taking half of her gold necklace with him.

According to a report by Sin Chew Daily, the incident took place at Jalan Tembaga, Penang, at around 5pm on Monday (May 26). Fortunately, the elderly woman only suffered minor skin injuries from the altercation with the snatch thief.

The elderly woman’s son shared that she was riding a motorcycle home after having bought items at a market in Batu Lanchang when a man on a motorcycle approached her, claiming to be a police officer who needed to stop and check her.

Considering the man wasn’t wearing a police uniform, the elderly woman became suspicious and refuted the man’s claim that he was a police officer.

“The other party then suddenly tried to snatch the gold necklace my mother was wearing, and it broke in half,” her son explained.

Unwilling to back down from the situation, the elderly woman then picked up her water bottle and used it to fight against the snatch thief. He, on the other hand, attempted to grab the other half of the necklace but ultimately failed and fled in a hurry.

While no one helped the elderly woman as the fight took place, the elderly woman’s son said he understands why.

“Because my mother didn’t cry for help when she was being robbed, others might have just thought it was a fight. But, later, everyone came forward to show concern for my mother,” he added.

The snatch thief has been arrested

In a post shared to his Facebook page, the elderly woman’s son, Elwyn Elwyn, revealed that the snatch thief has been captured by the police.

He also included his heartfelt thank yous to those who assisted his mother, including 2 vehicle owners at the scene, one of whom helped his mum with her injuries and had taken her to a police station.

A video of the incident has also since gone viral online. You can check out the video here.

A huge kudos to the elderly woman who fought bravely against the snatch thief. What do you think about this? Do feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section.
