According to a viral Facebook post, the emergency department in Penang Hospital had received four patients on January 30 after they had allegedly drank some durian coffee.

“Just to alert everyone that the Emergency Department in Penang Hospital has received four cases where patients were treated in the red zone after taking an instant coffee called ‘Durian White Coffee’.”

It was stated that all four patients showed symptoms of extreme fatigue, and two of them were admitted to the medical ward on January 27 after they had drank the Durian White Coffee mixture. The Star reported that recent updates showed the number of patients who suffer from the same symptoms has increased to five.

The post explained that the compounds in durian and coffee can potentially increase blood pressure especially if taken simultaneously and can be harmful to those who have high blood pressure. The patients are reportedly in a stable condition. In response to this viral issue, the Penang Health Department has taken samples of the coffee mixture for analysis and will be announcing the results soon to determine the cause of this sudden incident.

Health Minister Dr S Subramaniam said, “If it is found that the coffee mixture contains prohibited items, we will announce the brand name and its manufacturer will be ordered to withdraw the product from the market. So far, from reports received, five people have been admitted to Penang Hospital after drinking what was being promoted as a ‘Durian White Coffee’ mixture.”

Health Director-General Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah also released a statement on his Facebook page, saying that the Penang Health Department will be carrying out an extensive analysis before releasing the results. He advised anyone who experienced similar symptoms to head to the hospital immediately and make sure that the food and beverages consumed are always clean and safe.
