Even though cancer treatment methods have progressed greatly, the diagnosis of cancer can still feel like a death sentence to many, not least of all because of the long road to recovery. A man in Johor recently committed suicide, allegedly because he was tired of battling colon cancer.

According to China Press, the body of the 32-year-old man was found in a drain by the side of a street in Taman Mount Austin, Johor, yesterday morning (April 15). Investigations revealed that the victim, named Teng, had tied a rope to the pipes that stretch across the roadside drains, and hung himself from it. The drains are believed to have a depth of 2.5 to 3 metres.

South Johor Bahru district police chief Shahurinain Jais verified the case, saying that his team had received a report from the suicide victim’s sister at 11.45am on Monday morning (April 15). At the time of his death, Teng remained unmarried, and was the fourth of five siblings. Prior to the death, his job was to recite chants at funerals, and he had been doing so for the past five to six years. It’s eerie thinking about how he will now be the one on the receiving end of these chants.

Coincidentally, the scene of the suicide is located less than 30 metres away from the deceased’s office. Perhaps it’s his way of implying to his family that their burdens can be somewhat lessened with the help of a funeral parlour?

Due to his battle with colon cancer, Teng was said to have been tormented by the demons of his disease, and decided to end his life because of it. His remains have been delivered to the Pandan Hospital for an autopsy, and police are in the midst of carrying out full investigations.

Our hearts go out to his family members, whose whole lives will undoubtedly never be the same again after this great loss. Although it’s a horrible way to go, it’s not our place to judge someone’s actions, especially when that someone is going through an ailment that is so deeply devastating. We hope that the victim finds peace in the afterlife.
