A 14-year-old female student in Cambodia was raped and murdered in her school toilet, where her body was later discovered.

The gruesome discovery was made by a staff member at Phnom Penh’s Wat Kruos Primary School around 6:30 am on May 21, as teachers were preparing for the start of the school day. Police were immediately notified, and it did not take long for authorities to identify and arrest the suspects.

The youngest suspect is 15 years old, while the other two are 16 and 18.

Local police confirmed that the murder was premeditated. The 18-year-old suspect, a neighbour of the victim, instructed the other two to invite her out for a drink. Unbeknownst to the victim, her drink had been laced with sleeping pills.

After she lost consciousness, the suspects took turns raping her before strangling her to death—a cause confirmed by the post-mortem examination. They also stole her belongings, including a necklace, and left her body in the school toilet. According to police, the murder occurred around 1:30 am.

Authorities have taken the three teenagers—aged 18, 16, and 15—into custody on suspicion of rape and murder. Police are preparing a case for submission to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, according to The Phnom Penh Post.

All three suspects had dropped out of school and were from the same village as the victim.
