Recently, it was announced that Malaysia has been given the opportunity to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games following Australia’s withdrawal from hosting duties due to concerns over costs.

With the opportunity falling into Malaysia’s lap, many have their own opinions over whether or not our country should host the tournament as the Malaysian government still ponders a decision.

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh took to her Twitter account to share that the government is still evaluating the pros and cons of hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games on our shores in a clip during today’s (March 21) Dewan Rakyat session.

She said, “So far, the position of the Federal Government is not known but I can state that the view of the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), which is what is certain that KBS always puts the interests of the people as the number one priority and does not at all waste taxpayers’ money even if it is willing to organise it.”

“We will make sure that a conservative approach is taken every time it involves the people’s money. If the government agrees to implement it, KBS suggests spending not exceeding the grant given by the CGF (Commonwealth Sports Federations).”

Yay or nay, what do you say?

Considering that the people’s money may in involved should we do host the tournament, many have taken to share their opinions over whether or not we should do it.

And it appears that the majority says no.

“There’s no need to even consider.”

Considering Malaysia is hosting the 34th South East Asian Games in 2027, perhaps our government should focus on making that as epic as they can?

Do you think Malaysia should host the 2026 Commonwealth Games? Do feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section.
