For 30 years, IKEA has been at home with many Malaysians, transforming simple ideas into meaningful spaces and everyday memories. What started as a newcomer entry into the market has grown into a shared journey shaped by the many people who made IKEA their own.

When IKEA first opened its doors in Malaysia, it introduced a new way of thinking about home furnishing, through flat-pack design, functional solutions, and even Swedish favourites like meatballs. Malaysians quickly made these their own, adapting versatile furniture into spaces for first homes, growing families, and everyday living.

A familiar beginning for many Malaysians

Ikea Store Opening

For many people, the IKEA experience began with a simple visit consisting of room setups, ideation, and space planning. And of course, bringing home that first flat-pack and figuring out how to put it all together.

That was the beginning of the IKEA journey in Malaysia, and the start of creating better everyday living at home. As Malaysian homes evolved over time, from smaller urban spaces to growing family households, IKEA grew alongside them, adapting its solutions to meet changing lifestyles and needs.

There’s an IKEA in every Malaysian home

From storage to living rooms, iconic IKEA designs such as the BILLY bookcase, POÄNG chair, KLIPPAN sofa and KALLAX shelving unit have made their way to homes across the country. Created for real life and everyday use, they continue to support how Malaysians live, organise, and relax at home.

Over time, these pieces are no longer just products, but familiar parts of daily routines, quietly supporting life at home in simple and practical ways.

“Our vision since day one has been to create a better everyday life for the many people, and Malaysians have brought that vision to life in ways we could never have imagined,” said Malcolm Pruys, Country Retail Director of IKEA Malaysia.

“From the excitement of our first store to the stores thriving today, this 30th anniversary is our heartfelt thank you to customers, co-workers, and communities who have shaped IKEA into a true part of Malaysian homes.”

Guided by founder Ingvar Kamprad’s ethos, “If you take care of the customer, the growth will take care of itself,” IKEA Malaysia remains committed to offering well-designed, functional home furnishing at prices that make better living accessible to the many.
