Muar Member of Parliament (MP) Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has been fully acquitted after the Federal Court dismissed the prosecution’s appeal against the Court of Appeal’s earlier decision to overturn his conviction and sentence.

In a 2-1 majority decision, Federal Court judges Datuk Che Mohd Ruzima Ghazali and Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah ruled that the Court of Appeal had not erred in allowing the former Youth and Sports Minister’s appeal in June 2025.

Conviction and sentence set aside

The Federal Court panel was chaired by Court of Appeal President Datuk Seri Abu Bakar Jais, who delivered the dissenting judgment.

In their majority ruling, Che Mohd Ruzima and Sequerah found no errors of law or procedural irregularities warranting an overturning of the Court of Appeal’s decision. With the prosecution’s appeal dismissed, Syed Saddiq’s previous conviction and sentence of seven years’ imprisonment, two strokes of the cane, and a RM10 million fine have been set aside.

According to a report by Astro Awani, this brings the legal proceedings against him to an end.

Courtroom reactions and case background

The decision was immediately followed by applause from Syed Saddiq’s family members and supporters present in the courtroom.

The case stemmed from two charges of abetting criminal breach of trust, one charge of dishonest misappropriation of property, and two counts of money laundering involving funds belonging to Bersatu’s youth wing, Armada.
